Doctor Who Fundraiser a Success!

On Friday, November 22nd, we held a Doctor Who themed fundraiser to help reduce the cost to families to send their your travellers to the Berlin Improv Festival from March 21 - 31st, 2014. The streets of Victoria were witness to the first time ever (to our knowledge) of a full sized TARDIS being wheeled down the Douglas Street sidewalk from the Cineplex Odeon theatre to the Vic Theatre. Many participants came dressed for the occasion and participated in the Doctor Who Themed Costume Contest! Our concession featured a great selection of baked goodies, along with some Doctor Who themed drinks: the Galifrey Double Sunrise and the Regeneration Energy. Dr. Who / Berlin 2014 Improv Festival Fundraiser! Looking for auction donations - can you help?

Artist: Chris Lynch Improvisational theatre can be best described as collective storytelling. The skills the students learn will help them in many more ways besides performing - we’re talking public speaking, self confidence (performing in front of audiences starting at 20 people and up to 200 people or more), teamwork, listening skills, presentation skills and the list goes on. It's a wrap for 2012-13!

This year has been a fantastic adventure for the Improv Club!  The Bellingham Trip Team! It began with a field trip to the Upfront Theatre in Bellingham Washington where we watched "Hellingham" (an improvised murder mystery) and had a workshop delivered to us by the Upfront Theatre's Artistic Director, Billy Tierney.  All the students who participated thoroughly enjoyed their time on this trip and we came back a better team! Alan Penty (Victoria), Sara Šoukal (Slovenia) and Jonathan Argue (Victoria) Through connections fostered by one of our dedicated improv coaches, Jonathan Argue, we twinned our club with a similar improv club at a school in Ljubljana, Slovenia called " Gimnazija Vič " (which translates to "High School Vic").  We exchanged videos we created about our respective schools and issued each other challenges.  Our Slovenian friends became tied up with their studies and will be finishing publishing their challenges o

Our response to Challenge #3 - The Match

Here it is! Our response to challenge #3 - The Match! This challenge was about explaining the competitions that each school team partakes in.  In Canada, there is a national competition called the Canadian Improv Games (CIG) which has been going on for over 30 years.  It is a Olympic-style competition aimed at high school students in grades 9 through 12 which happens across the country.  Each team has a choice of 5 events they can present - only 4 events have to be performed.  Events have a time limit (four minutes for the senior teams and  three minutes for the junior teams) and are scored by a panel of judges.  While it is "competitive", the CIG promotes this as as a "loving competition" which is reflected in the way that all teams support each other. Our response has various team members explaining the events in their own words mixed in with footage from the events themselves.
