Our sister team, Obi Vic Kenobi, has posted their response to our first challenge .  For that challenge, we asked them to show us as many ways of incorporating a banana (or the symbol it inspires) into a scene as possible. This video pulls together pieces of Vic High's annual Fine Arts Night followed by a series of monologues from members of the senior team about what the holidays mean to them. Fine Arts Night is important tradition at Vic High which happens every year in the first week of December. It showcases all the arts activities at the school - R&B band, dance, art, photography, drama and improv! it's something that all the students look forward to! In improv (and other performing art forms for that matter), it's important for everyone to warm-up together as we want to be ready to listen, react, add... etc. as part of telling stories together. We played "Gibberish Interview" and had a suggestion of "Director". In this scene, the Interviewee (Conall) can only speak in gibberish.  We have a translator (Mia) who interprets what his responses are to questions posted by the Interviewer (Eva). It's happened! Both teams have exchanged their first improv challenge! The Vic High Sharks sent... "Let's see as many ways of incorporating a banana (or the symbol it inspires) into a scene as possible." Our sister team sent... " You must incorporate 5 Sloveninan words into your scene. The words are: ŠELESTENJE, ČRMLJ, SRŠEN, PIŠČALKA and PREPEČENEC ." Now, each team will be working on their response to their challenge over the next month and by the end of November we have to have filmed and uploaded our response - stay tuned! In our last post we let you know that we'll be twinning our club with a similar improv club at a school in Ljubljana, Slovenia called " Gimnazija Vič " (you can also find the school on Facebook ). Fun fact - "Gimnazija Vič" stands for "High school Vic" So, you are probably wondering "Just how will this be done?" Well, let's give you some back story first.  Back in June 2012, one of our coaches, Jonathan Argue, went to an international improv festival that is hosted by Unexpected Productions in Seattle, Washington.  Improvisors from all over the world come to this festival to spend a week taking workshops together and performing.  It was during this time that he met Sara Šoukal, who happens to also be an improv coach at Gimnazija Vič. Jonathan and Sara mused about how fantastic it would be to find a way for both teams to share ideas about improv and together they came up with the idea of twinning the teams. Sara wrote up a proj

Auditions are done and we're welcoming 8 junior team members and 14 senior team members to the club! This is going to be fantastic! Even better.... this year we're twinning the team with a high school improv team from Ljubljana, Slovenia ! How we gonna do that? Well, you'll just have to stay tuned for the details...

Typical start to a CIG Nationals evening... from Jon Argue on Vimeo . I must say, the energy each evening at the finals has been very upbeat and positive!  To underscore this point, a typical start to an evening is a small dance party as you can see in this video.. how great is that?!! Unfortunately for the teams playing tonight, none of them are going onto the finals tomorrow night (April 7, 2012). Due to a tie, the teams will only be playing three events each (probably to keep the evening from running too long).  We'll be watching... 1. Milton District - 903 2. Templeton HS - 896 3. Kitsilano SS - 895 4. All Saints - 883 5. Canterbury - 861 6. Kelvin HS - 861 It will be an intense evening for sure... followed by a huge dance party at the University of Ottawa which runs till 1:30am (yikes!) I expect to see man sleepy faces Sunday morning as most of us have to be at the airport around 6am. Night all!

We eventually got going by 10am and made our way to the parliament buildings .  We took the tour and managed to catch the parade of the Speaker of the House as they headed to the Senate. Our tour guide was very helpful and answered questions such as "Is there a cat santuary on parliament hill?" (Chase), to which the answer was "Yes, there is.  It is run by volunteers but recently we've noticed more rodents than cats."  The guide was also quizzed about the rules of the house as we had just come from seeing a small portion of question period where the students had witnessed everything they are told not to do in class! We split into two groups and one group headed across the river to Hull, Quebec while the other group tracked down the location of "Forever 21"... which is, according to them, the place to go for clothes. We eventually made it back to the hotel and after re-charging for a bit we headed off to night #3 of the CIG Nationals. 

At the end of Wednesday evening, after a lenghty "What's in the Box?" or "Tub of Wonder" as Ms. Tammy Renyard would call it, the Head Ref read out the scores for the evening. This is a tough time for all the players, especially our Vic High students who have been so focused on doing their best and, as many teams, are hoping to have another chance to hit the stage at the finals. "Look, out of three nights of play so far, of the top five teams to carry on, three of them come from our night." said Mr. Penty (Vic High's Head Coach), "We scored in the middle of the pack and there's nothing wrong with that!" One of the evening's quotable quotes includes "Your love flows like magma."

The team is feeling good about tonight... But first things first.. DINNER TIME!

Saw the first night of the Nationals. So exciting to be in the National Arts Centre and watch. The level was very good. Some knock out pieces that blew us away. A clowning style scene that was amazing. Some of the more unusual approaches worked but some didn't. We feel solid about performing tomorrow night. Jason (Saltspring Island) said "These kids are dancing between confidence and ego". Let's hope the confident side wins. Workshops at 11 and practice tomorrow at 2. Night, Alan

The team arrived safely and are at the hotel now!

Bright and early at 5:45am PDT this morning 9 Vic High improv team members accompanied by the Head Coach (Alan Penty), Senior Team Coach (Monica Ogden) and Chaperone (Tammy Renyard) boarded the plan to begin their journey to Ottawa.  At approximately 5pm EDT they will be arriving at the hotel and attempting to get settled for the evening - good luck! Their first performance is on Wednesday, April 4th at 7:30pm EDT at the National Arts Centre where they will be joined by.. All Saints (Ottawa) Templeton HS (Lower Mainland, B.C) Gulf Islands Secondary School (Online Wildcard) Kelvin HS (Winnipeg) For a complete schedule of performances, take a look at the National Festival site. They have to place in the top 5 scoring teams in order to make it to the finals on Saturday, April 7th... so the pressure is on!  This means that the top five scoring teams from April 3rd to 6th move forward. I'm happy to be joining the team during their time in Ottawa and will be posting updates
